Yale iGEM Timeline

For those interested in what a typical year with Yale iGEM looks like, we offer the following monthly breakdown:

January/February

  • Begin new member recruitment and team selection
  • Begin journal club discussions on pertinent synthetic biology literature
  • With the help of the Isaacs Lab, identify a potential project idea (in years past students have proposed ideas and presented thorough proposals to the group for review)
  • Find and raise funds from industrial and academic contacts
  • Identify full- and part-time researchers

March/April

  • Our graduate student team will begin to train the research team in relevant lab procedures
  • Begin project development and preliminary research

May-October

  • Conduct the main body of research for the iGEM competition
  • Begin the non-research iGEM competition requirements, which include: outreach, modeling, team wiki, poster and presentation, and team T-shirts
  • Present work at the regional iGEM competition (note that iGEM is currently discussing eliminating regional competitions in favor of one “Giant Jamboree” as was organized in 2014 in honor of the 10 years anniversary of iGEM)

November/December

  • Present work at National Jamboree
  • Begin finalization of research for publication/patent write-up
